Syringes have been used for decades in the medical and animal health industry. Syringes are used routinely for injectable, oral and topical products, including liquids, gels and pastes.

A syringe is comprised of a barrel, which contains the product; a plunger, which is used to evacuate the contents; and a cap, which secures itself on the orifice or nozzle of the barrel. Syringes are produced from two materials, polyethylene and polypropylene.

Nozzles on the end of the barrels are varied depending on the size of barrel and end use.

Oral nozzles are available in broad nose (1), long nose (2), paste tip (3), enema (4), extended long nose (5), wide mouth (6), large cannula (7).

Intramammary nozzles are available in cannula (9), short cannula (10), medium cannula (11), short cannula adapter (12).

Injectable nozzles are available in luer slip (14), luer lock (15).

Plungers can be either one piece, meaning the seal is molded onto the end of the plunger; or two pieces where a seal is installed on the end of plunger. Plungers can be either straight ribbed or notch ribbed accepting dosing rings.

Seals are affixed to the end of the plungers or installed in the barrel and the Mini-Cartridge™ plunger dispenses product. The different types of seals include; flat faced, EZ Glide™, tapered face, rubber.

Mini-Cartridge™ uses a mechanical device to perform the plunger function of dispensing the product from the barrel with seal.

Dosage rings are available in two versions, Multi-Dose™ and Accu-Dose™. The Multi-Dose™ ring is rotated on the plunger to the prescribed dosage mark on the plunger rib, while the Accu-Dose™ ring is notched to reflect one rotation of the ring for a pre-determined dose and also has dosage printed on the plunger rib.

Caps are produced to effectively cap and seal respective nozzles.

Primary difference between a container and an instrument is the actual uses. Administration utilizing as a container is primarily used for oral or intramammary applications that are preloaded by manufacturers and dispensed by end users. Syringes used as an instrument differ from containers as the syringe barrel is made of polypropylene which allows users to see contents when prepared for usage and the barrels are decorated with appropriate increments shown in ml or cc. Syringes used as instruments are sold empty and usually pre-sterilized.

Instrument syringes are generally three pieces including a plunger, rubber seal and decorated barrel with a nozzle that is either luer slip, luer lock or an oral tip.

Instrument Mini-Cartridge™ follows a similar construction except there is no plunger, only a seal and barrel. Mini-Cartridge™ needs a drive mechanism to load and express contents once prepared for usage. The tips on the Mini-Cartridge™ are luer slip, luer lock or oral tips.

Both Mini-Cartridge™ or syringe instruments can utilize caps that accommodate the respective tips, luer slip, luer lock or oral tips, depending on user needs or requirements.

Notes

  1. Often veterinarians may dispense injectable or oral medications to patient owners to be given at a later designated time. Thus, caps are necessary in this application.
  2. Primary use is for injection, whether in a clinic or on a farm.

Polyethylene syringes are used for oral or topical products. These white syringes usually dispense single or multiple doses.

The Collar™
The Collar™ is designed to add strength to the cartridge barrel and stabilize a needle installed on the luer lock and luer slip barrels. Proven in field tests, The Collar™ almost eliminates tip breakage typical with other plastic barrels and helps prevent needle breakage.
